I recently pulled a 20yr.ish old Noblet Paris Clarinet out of my attic that my stepmother used to play. It appears to be in good condition (as far as I can tell, I play saxophone). It sounds to me like it needs an overhaul (which was expected), as the horn sounds like it has an air leak (most likely form pads not sealing all the way). Can anybody give a rough estimate of the cost of overhauling this instrument? I'm guessing its just in need of a repadding, but then again, I don't play clarinet. Is Noblet a fair brand? Its serial is B10906.

Noblet is indeed a good brand.
As far as the cost of an overhaul, they vary around the country and vary with the amount of work done.
Best bet is to call stores in your area and ask. However be sure that they state what is and is not included in the overhaul price. Some overhauls are "playing condition" and are just the minumum to get it back into service. Other overhauls are "complete overhauls" and are much more extensive. Again be sure to ask what is included as some include not only new corks and pads but new springs, polishing the keywork, etc.

Thanks. I bought a new reed and have discovered that the clarinet works perfectly well, it was just the read I tried it on was crap. And I'm pleasantly surprised to see that the fingerings are so similar to those on sax. I'm still going to send it in for a tune-up, but I'm glad to see it won't be as bad as I thought.

I would get a clarinet fingering chart and the standard of exellence books(clarinet teaching methods) and learn to play!!!
