I have my own Bb clarinet and am going to get a new one and I have an Eb clarinet on lone from my old high school that I was told I could use as long as I want. My question is, what type of clarinet should I look at geting next? I don't think I want a contra bass,a bass, or an alto clarinet though.

Sara - you might get a wider response if you post your questions on the Sneezy clarinet board.

If you want to play in an orchestra, you should get an A clarinet. Most orchestral music is written for either a Bb clarinet or an A clarinet. If the music is written in A, it is extremely difficult to play it on a Bb, as you have to transpose everything down a semitone.

If you're not interested in orchestra and you don't want to play bass or alto, then there is really no need to get another clarinet at all. You might like to try an alto saxophone, though. The general principles are the same as the clarinet and the fingering in the first two octaves is reasonably similar.

If you're going to be doing any orchestral playing you should look into buying an A clarinet unless you can transpose by sight.

I have a clarinet that I am trying to sell. It's a wooden Yamaha clarinet model 450 (I do believe so). I'm only asking $350-$400 for it. I only played it for a year and a half. It's practically in mint condition...case included of course. If you need a mouthpiece I have a premiere I'll sell you for $20 with it. If you are interested e-mail me and let me know. If not...Good Luck!!
