I don't think it's absolutely necessary. It's nice, yes, but you don't HAVE to. I never took a flute lesson before and all the other flutes did, but I still got first chair. Flute just came really easy to me. Oboe, on the other hand, gave me a lot of problems, so I'm taking lessons for that. I guess it all depends on whether or not you have a good skill and comfort level on the instrument, and if you practice outside of band. What does everyone else think?

I haven't had to take lessons on any instruments (except when I wanted help on the all-state audition piece + free reeds) that i've played...I tought myself oboe when I was 12, clarinet at 15, and I'm learning the pit instruments (which don't need lessons, just help every once in a while from actual percussion people) now at 16. I also tought myself piano over last summer, the melodica when I was 13, recorder a while back, but now I've got it down perfect! So, you don't *have* to have lessons - but they can help clear up any bad habits you might create for yourself. If you can afford them, they're a great idea!

It's important that even if you don't continue with lessons, to at least take a few in order to make sure you're not making any obvious errors that a teacher can help you fix.
