It's been awhile, but here goes ...
Four books; other than R1, I don't think anyone had more than 3 instruments. R3 was clarinet & tenor, with 1 page of flute and 2 lines of oboe (both played on clarinet). I don't recall anything being terribly hard to play. It was manuscript (not Finale), with two pages out of order and one extraneous page, or something like that.
In this school production, they chose to use the revival cast CD track for the "Broadway melody" sequence in act 2; what's in the books evidently wasn't substantial enough. So we sat there for 13 minutes.

I should clarify: while the stage personnel were all HS kids, the pit was all grizzled veterans of the community theater pit circuit. Apparently, this school had halfway decent drama, dance, and choral instruction, but the band was limited to something like half an hour, three times a week, so for shows, they rounded up the usual suspects. Bottom line: I can't say whether HS'ers could cut it, though presumably the more skilled ones could if they worked on it.
