My teacher recently gave me the Strauss Oboe Concerto as the piece I'll probably be working on for the next couple months. I'm most likely going to enter the BSO concerto competition with this. Needless to say, it's incredibly difficult. The first roadblock I hit with trying to practice it is the breathing. The first 40 or so bars are incessant playing with no room to breathe. I've listened to Alex Klein and John de Lancie's recordings of it, and they are flawless. The only way I can figure they did it so well is with circular breathing, which I lack the technical facility to enact now. So in short, my question is this: How the hell do you play the beginning of the Strauss 1st Movement?
Much appreciated,
