Back in 1998 when I started playing oboe, I just relied on whatever brand reeds I could find off the shelf at our local music store. I found myself gravitating towards La Voz med-soft for the most part as I got the best response and durability from them. Then around five years later, I stopped playing music – until the pandemic and a house move made it possible for me to take all my instruments (oboe and clarinets) out of storage and start playing again. I have since found out that La Voz oboe reeds are no longer made, so I am wondering what are the typically available and encountered brands now and if any are comparable to La Voz. I still have three new reeds I stockpiled but eventually will need to find something for replacement. I have tried a couple Jones reeds and I find them really difficult to work with as they seem harder strength than sold, as well as a stifled, muffled tone. I don’t really have the patience or skill to fart around with modifying reeds. Any recommendations for off the shelf brands? I generally play polka / ländler / European folk type music now in amateur setting so not needing something ‘refined’ or professional, etc. Just something that plays easy from the start.
