Hi everyone,
Reading a big long post on musicality on the clarinet BBoard, I'm wondering what most people's approach to learning/teaching music is. Personally, the way that my teacher teaches is that you teach the musicaltiy first, i.e. exactly where the phrase is going. Then, once you have this in mind and you know exactly what you want the music to sound like, you then work on the technique because you'll demand the technique of yourself to make the music perfect. There is, of course, the method of teaching the technique first and then working on the music later. What does everyone think of this? Any thoughts on what you've experienced and what's worked for you? I personally find the first way far more fulfilling, because then no matter what you're doing you're always thinking about the music first which is of course the most important thing in the end.
