I have to recommend a recording. I'm scraping reeds this evening and listening again to oboist Aaron Cohen's CD "Oboisms." If you haven't heard it yet, buy it! This guy can really play. The CD includes sonatas by Srul Irving Glick, Gunther Schuller, and Samuel Adler, plus Walter Piston's Suite. I bought it to hear the Piston recording, as that work has long been one of my favorites. But the Glick piece is really the highlight of the disc. Especially the first movement.
Sadly, Cohen is not a household name amongst American oboists, since he's not an orchestral player... and that's all we care about here, right? But the guy can really play. I've been pulling this disc out regularly to illustrate things for my students. His sound reminds me of that classic de Lancie sound, but Cohen is more expressive, has better legato, and generally has more control. It's kind of like listening to de Lancie on steroids.
If you get this disc, listen especially to the passage from 3:44 to the end of mvmt I (Glick). Simply exquisite!
Cheers,
Drew
