I have acquired a wood oboe stamped "Ideal/Whaley Royce & Co/Toronto" high on the bell. The system is pre-conservatory. I can make out lower on the bell another maker's stemp that has been almost completely sanded off. Part of it seems to read "Sweet & Co."
Was it common practice for North American companies to hide their European sources. Any thoughts as to the time period for this instrument. I understand it was owned but not played by a clarinetist in the Toronto Symphony.
