 E. Chavaneau Nocturnes; same configuration as the de Falla Concerto for harpsichord

Hi there! If ever you are looking for another piece to go with the De Falla Harpsichord Concerto and its odd instrumentation: harpsicord, oboe, flute, clarinet, violin and cello; I suggest Emmanuel Chavaneau's Nocturnes, which are exactly for the same configuration. They were written three or four years ago and are fine, poetic pieces, not too difficult to play. They would complement the de Falla piece -which is far more difficult- well in a concert. The composition is available free of charge on the Petrucci IMSLP site.

PS: I would like to see suggestions for repertoire become more of a regular feature on this board. We mustn't just play the same few dozen pieces our whole lives long.

I found two of the Nocturnes on Youtube, and they are indeed very nice pieces. The performers use a piano in place of a harpsichord and feature the composer on violin and Ruben Greenberg on clarinet. Nice playing, Ruben, and thank you for the recommendation.

That's a great suggestion!

And thank you, Philip, for mentioning the videos – that's very fine music.

Thank you so much, Philip. We, unfortunately, didn't have access to a harpsichord for that concert. The Five Nocturnes sound much better on the harpsichord; which suits their delicate texture more. They are a perfect complement for the great de Falla Concerto, as they are for exactly the same instrumentation and are very different from de Falla's masterpiece.
