I am interested in upgrading barrels on Selmer Signet Special and Signet Soloist clarinets. Intonation is fine, but am looking to achieve a slightly more interesting and colorful sound. I have nicer clarinets, but would like to maximize the potential of these. What are the proven barrel upgrades?

For Selmer Signet Special and Soloist clarinets, focusing on barrels to achieve a more interesting and colorful sound while maintaining good intonation is a common upgrade path. Proven options generally involve moving to high-quality grenadilla wood barrels if yours are not already, or exploring aftermarket barrels from specialized manufacturers.
Brands like Backun (e.g., Lumière, MoBa, Fatboy) and Fobes are frequently cited for their ability to enhance tonal qualities. Backun offers various models, each designed to provide different resistance levels and tonal characteristics (e.g., warmer, darker, more free-blowing, or focused). Fobes barrels, often featuring an inverted cone bore and made from aged African blackwood, are known for improving resonance and response. While direct "proven" upgrades specifically for Signet models aren't as widely documented as for professional instruments, these high-quality aftermarket barrels are designed to improve the acoustic properties of a wide range of clarinets, including good quality intermediate horns like the Signet series. Experimenting with different lengths and bore designs can also fine-tune the sound to your preference.
