Is there an standalone app for pc that can produce music notation for solo clarinet that could be displayed or simply linked to here, without a lot of other stuff? I don't need to write a score; I just want to show notes for a single instrument. I'd be willing to pay for it, but I'd rather not have to subscribe to anything or need an online account for it.
If this has been addressed here recently, I apologize; my search for previous topics only found recommendations for apps either for other platforms or too top-heavy for my needs.

Hi Karl, thanks. Just before posting I downloaded the latest free MuseScore and gave it a try. It has a lot of stuff, and I couldn't quickly see a way past it all to the simple thing I want to do. If you say that app can do it in a straightforward way, I'll go back and start delving around.

I think you'll be able to find a way fairly easily, and you can't beat the price. I suppose there are the low-end Finale (MakeMusic) and Sibelius versions, but they cost money for similar results.
I don't know what kinds of front end exist now for Lilypond, which originally was a scripting language for which you had to learn a syntax, but that was years ago. I assume by now it has either been incorporated into some more modern (paid) notation program or there are GPL apps that will let you do more Finale-like things using LilyPond as the back end.
But I think the simplest path to want you want is probably MuseScore once you get beyond the initial learning curve.

Exactly. Others are downright baffling compared to Musescore (Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, Cakewalk), not to mention expensive, although some have free versions. Spend a half hour with Musescore, and you'll be fine. Nothing easier exists, at least something that actually works.

I love Lilypond.
Enter melodies by typing c4 d2 (for a quarter note C followed by a half note D).
There are some front ends written for it. Very powerful, with nice looking results.
There are a few basic rules you'd have to learn for simple melody entry...but not much.
The things I love about it:
#1 the output.
#2 the ability to script for it/with it
#3 the ability to use any text entry tool (or even cell phone text) to enter the music notation.
etc.
Not for everyone, but its a great tool.

To explain the system to the few who will view the video...the numbers I'm entering are all denominators under 1. For instance, a 2= 1/2 (or a half note), a 4 = 1/4 (or a quarter note), an 8 = 1/8 (or an eighth note), a 1 = 1/1 (or a whole note), etc.
A period (full stop) equals a dotted note.
A tilde (~) mean a tied note
A opening parenthesis equals the beginning of a slur, and
a closing parenthesis equals the end of a slur.
To jump greater than a perfect 5th upward, use an apostrophe
To jump greater than a major perfect 5th downward - use a comma
Sharps and flats can be modified to suit your language. I use s for sharp and f for flat.
To force a flat or sharp to re-display (where it normally wouldn't) you simply precede the sharp or flat with an exclamation.
It sounds like a lot of rules - but its really not. And it has the added benefit of letting you enter music from anywhere from any platform with a text editor.

I wrote my own custom front ends for it to make lead sheet entry and four-part hymn entry super easy.

If you need help getting started, just give me a holler via e-mail (it's a little more difficult to get started without the front-end that I created, but I'd be happy to give you a template where you'd just enter data exactly as shown, but in a text file.)

For the record, Musescore input works almost the same, letter keys for notes, number keys for durations, but the notes appear as you go. That would be easier for a novice I think than just making a text file that looks like computer code and seeing if it will work. Reminds me of the old mainframe days back in the 80s. Nothing wrong with that, but I've been spoiled by 40 years of point and click GUIs.

I love Musescore, so I won't say anything bad about it (I haven't used any new versions in the past five or more years...as I've grown accustomed to the freedom and power of Lilypond.)
Lilypond grew on me because of the scripting options, modularity (you can basically make objects/modules that you can copy/paste into other solutions as the need arises). Creating set lists, lead sheets PDF, batch processing of multiple existing text files to match any current project, etc. It does have a few admitted shortcomings too. Still...I feel it is an underutilized tool in today's technology-savvy world. It can be an extremely powerful and time-saving option.
But...admittedly - it's not for everyone.

Thanks to all for the recommendations. I was able to write a simple example with MuseScore 4, and for a first try it was pretty straightforward. I like that standard text editing techniques, like copy/paste, multi-select, etc. apply.
The program can export to numerous formats. If I wish to share what I write with MuseScore on this forum, what method would be easiest for viewers?

If you only intend for others to be able to read what you share, PDF would be the most logical choice. It can be viewed on any PDF reader independent of any other software. If you want people to be able to make their own changes - transpose it, add or subtract instruments, etc. using their own notation software, you'd be best exporting it to MusicXML, which can be imported into most modern notation programs but will need to be imported to be readable.

https://musescore.com appears to let you upload and share MuseScore music online for others to view / download / print. I have not used it myself, however, and you'd obviously have to be careful of sharing copyrighted material.

I was just browsing in the software download utility in my installation of Kubuntu and noticed that not only is LiliyPond available, but also a front end called Frescobaldi, which, while not WYSIWYGby any means, has prompts and other aids for inputting nusic into LilyPond.
Has anyone here used Frescobaldi? I don't know right now what other OS platforms it may exist on.

@Karl: Frescobaldi is available for Windows, MacOS and Linux (all major distributions).
I have been using it for a couple of years as a frontend for Lilypond, and I must say that I am very happy with it. Makes it a lot easier to get used to Lilypond's source-oriented approach.
