I have been having some tennis elbow-like problems in my left elbow for the past couple of months. It seems to be related to clarinet playing, Particularly after my DMA recital last semester where I played some extremely technically challenging repertoire. Has anyone else ever experienced this in their left arm?

Try acupuncture-provided the person that practices it is a real doctor. It works wonders for this. I've only experienced tennis elbow in the right arm: the one that holds up the clarinet. I place the bell between my knees or use a strap half the time. Good luck!

I’ve had similar issues and it is painful. You might try using a neck strap (available at many music suppliers) which would reduce the tension in your hands and arms. No guarantee but with a try. It did help me.

I found that a loop of webbing or cloth — I used a necktie — can be worn around the neck and over the shoulder and placed under the right elbow like a sling for a broken arm. It takes all the stress and weight from the elbow and wrist but still allows maneuverability. Made from dark material, it's hardly noticeable.

I have had tennis elbow and golfer's elbow at various times on both my left and right elbow over the years. Tennis elbow is "lateral epicondylitis" and golfer's elbow is "medial epicondylitis". Tennis elbow inflames the elbow joint that is away from your body (outer) while golfer's elbow inflames the elbow joint that is near to your body (inner). When I had pain I went to an orthopedic clinic, where they examined my elbow and gave me a shot of cortisone right where the pain was. Within a few days I had relief from the pain, which did not come back for over a year. I have noticed that when I do a lot of practicing for concerts it aggravates my elbow joint. So now I do stretching exercises specifically for the elbow several times a day and take breaks and stretch during my practice sessions. Your best bet might be going to an orthopedic clinic for an assessment of your elbow pain.
