Just a Signet ..not a 100 !
Anyone know about this model? Is it worth refurbishing? Sn is 909706. Needs pads and cork... Plastic(resonite) sections are in good condition...few scratches...Looks like silver plating? thanks Herb in Ky...trying to find a Clarinet for my Grand Daughter..Second year student...8th grade..

I've found that Signets can be a mixed bag. I've worked on some that were a bit stuffy and some that played quite well. Not worth spending a lot on, but if you can get it for very little it might be worth doing. If she's a novice it could be a low-cost starting point, but if she has advanced past that stage then probably not. There are better low-cost horns available that will do the job better. Yamaha, Vito, Selmer 1400, Selmer Bundy and others.

It's essentially the same clarinet as a plastic Bundy/Buescher/Selmer 1400 but has pointed pad cups instead of domed ones.
I overhauled a Buescher Aristocrat version for someone late last year, so they can be improved compared to how they were when they left the factory.

Having a Signet here in my studio, and having played others, I'd hesitate to recommend one to a student. The main issue I have is that the keys are less resistant to bending and more prone to wear than the mechanisms on Vito and Yamaha instruments.
Keep in mind that once you buy this particular Signet, have it serviced, and obtain a good mouthpiece for it, you're going to have $300-$400 invested in the instrument. Your granddaughter, already in Grade 8, could be expected to upgrade to something better in high school--so the Signet may not even represent a long-term solution.
If she were my lessons student, I'd much prefer that she would be playing a Vito 7214, Vito V-40, Leblanc 7250, Yamaha YCL-20, or Yamaha YCL-250. You should be able to find one of these models, already in good playing condition, for $200 or less.
