 Janacek Die Jeugend Mladi

Hi guys so I'm playing Janacek Mladi on the bass clarinet and there's only one part that really trips me up. The part where every except the bassoon plays on the off beats and it goes by at 160. I practiced the part and feel the part at 160, so when I play with the group (who are playing it 140) they say I'm rushing. When I try to slow it down I end up dragging so much I get back ON the beat.

When I played it with my bass clarinet teacher, who played on the down beats as i play on the off beats, I played it perfect with no problems.

What would you guys suggest? I'm trying to feel 1 against 4, when I put my tongue on the reed that's the eigth note rest, and feeling a huge "umph" when the one comes back again.

This is the third movement right? I've read through it before, but haven't performed it. I'm working on Hindemith Septet on Bass Clarinet right now with a group..

I'd first start off with doubling each note to simulate the bassoon than alternate measures between doubling and regular. The biggest issues with building competent rhythmic integrity is understanding the spaces between notes.. hence why percussionists rule that world.

Actually it's the first movement at bar 62. After the horn has it's solo.

Yeah I'll probably start doing that I find that sometimes I'm neglecting the second eighth note rest.

I have played that part and remember it well. The same problem happens anytime you have rapid off-beats. No matter what your teacher does, it will never replicate what happens in your particular group.

My way of doing this is to feel it in larger groupings, meaning if its 4/4 time, I play it in 1. I'm not sure why this works for me, but it does. Also, I listen very carefully to the group, or downbeat and just react to it... bounce off of them. This sort of thing is easier to do with experience. I remember at the beginning that it was VERY difficult.

As for trying to place your tongue back on the reed for the 8th rests, I'd recommend not doing that. It complicates things. It's overthinking something that you have to feel.

If they say you are rushing, then you probably are. The tendency is always in that direction. Just try and relax and get in the pocket. Play a little quieter if need be and think of playing one beat per bar.

Yeah I've been practicing it at 160, but I have the metronome accent the first beat from the grouping of 4 beats. Then I also have the metronome randomly cut out and come back in.
