I just recently got the vandoreen optimum ligature (which plays wonderfully). Because it is silver-plated, it came with a litle bag hat one is supposed to put it in after use.
Being stupid, I put it on a mouthpiece that I recently swabbed and then I suck that combination into the bag. Coming back after a few hours, I noticed that the mouthpiece and the mouthpiece cap (which was also stuck in the bag) smelled wonderfully, to say the least.
Can anyone offer a solution to remove that nasty smell?

I know that a new to newish hard rubber mouthpiece will make the ligature tarnish ASAP. The bag helps keep the ligature from tarnishing.
If the smell from such products as Tarn-x is any indication, you've just created fresh tarnish from your mouthpiece/ligature combination that has been simultaneously taken away by the bag, creating an awful sulphur smell.
Wash the mouthpiece is cool water with soap and a gentle cloth/swab. Don't use hot water as it will destabilize the rubber and make it look dull and aged. Also, you clean the ligature similarly, and dry it the best you can. Put the ligature back in the bag when you feel it is dry. Eventually the bag will stop working/you'll leave the ligature on the mouthpiece and it will turn black.
*the smell might not leave the bag for a while

Questions:
1) So the bag that comes with the Vandoren Optimum Ligature is not merely like a mouthpiece piece pouch in that it serves solely as a storage container and protector for the ligature when not in use, but it has chemicals in it, say, not dissimilar to ones found in the 3M Company's Anti Tarnish strips you might stick in a clarinet case?
2) Are the ligature plates sold seperately and otherwise required when using the ligature?
3) Is the gold finished version of the ligature only for saxophones, and otherwise subject to the same potential tarnishing?

WhitePlainsDave: 1.) I believe the anti-tarnish bag does have chemicals in it. 2.) No, all 3 plates come with the ligature, with the vertical-rails one pre-attached and the other two in a plastic bag. 3.) The gold one is only available for saxophone, correct.

Worse case scenario then I surmise would be that if the bag's odor persists, I imagine then that the O.P. could supply their own bag (say a small freezer lock plastic bag. and put these into it in addition to the stored ligature:

Whether the original bag or the aforementioned strips, either way, I would bet money the effectiveness of said chemicals is reduced over time, suggesting need to purchase the above regardless, in order to keep ligature tarnish at bay.
