 tune a reed?

If you have a reed that otherwise plays well, but tends to play flatter in pitch than others, what would you adjust on the reed to bring the pitch up?

I know you'll get lots of ideas on this one. I suppose the easiest assumption to make is that the reed is too soft and that clipping the smallest sliver off the tip might bring the pitch up. But that may slightly dull the sound so you may need to start doing other things to restore lost vibrancy.

My real opinion is that life is too short and reeds too inexpensive (relatively) to waste time trying to fix reed problems if the cause isn't fairly obvious. If there are 5 things that *might* cause the problem, you'll have destroyed the reed anyway by the time you try possible cause #3, assuming that each fix involves removing material somewhere.

If it's flat because it's soft, try clipping it and if that doesn't improve things, chuck it.

Karl's advice is sound.

Switching barrels though is a thought, and taking in more of the mouthpiece can help.

Tom Ridenour has some useful videos on YouTube about this, but snugging the mouthpiece he refers to I suspect has more to do with sharpening some flat notes in the registers, not for when all notes play flat on a particular reed.
