 "A" versus "Bb" barrels
Author: WhitePlainsDave

I've noticed that when it comes to Buffet barrels in particular, including the Moenig and Chadash versions, that barrels aren't simply referred to by their length in millimeters, but whether they are designed for an "A" or "Bb" clarinet.

Meanwhile other barrel makers don't make such distinctions.

What gives?

Since Buffet clarinets have a polycylindrical French design, I would think each clarinet would begin tapering at different points. . May be poppycock though.

Some barrel makers do. The only one I can name for certain is Clark Fobes. Although I use some of Allan Segal's barrels, they were custom-made for specific instruments, so identifying them as A or Bb would have been pointless. As far as I know, Morrie Backun doesn't label barrels for A or Bb - you just pick the ones you like from the dozen or so he'll send you - at least that's how it was when I last bought barrels from him.

I expanded on this a little more in Micke Isotalo's thread about changing mouthpieces and barrels together between instruments.

I can understand a potential theoretical need for different barrels on A and Bb clarinets but the overwhelming practicality of using same barrel for both seems obvious.
Buffet typically specify 66mm for Bb and 65mm for A. Why not adjust the length of the top joint on either by 1 mm so that same length barrel works on both.
As to difference in tapers the effect is probably quite minimal - most other makers seem happy to use same barrel for both and even some pro Buffet players stick with using same barrel on both.
I have feeling that on the Divine model even Buffet have come around to this.
