In browsing the NY Phil. archives, I found a sympathetic portrait of Simeon Bellison, with a good view of his Bb http://archives.nyphil.org/index.php/artifact/98097bbc-ce25-43ef-a53e-fbb9ac1e5838

Click on the photo to enlarge it.

There are bunches more at http://archives.nyphil.org/index.php/search?search-type=singleFilter&search-text=clarinet&doctype=visual&x=0&y=0&search-dates-from=&search-dates-to=#.

Love the cigars in the clarinet case

The sausage-looking thing under his left-hand fingers looks like a swab to me.

The cardboard box with the rubber band says ...Cigars/ACTS... but he's holding 3 reeds, so he may have used the box for that. Too bad Kal Opperman is gone. He was a Bellison student.

What?

No $75 humidity controlled, charcoal cartridge, hermetically sealed reed case?

How could he ever be assured of a great reed?

Color me shocked.

I'm thinking that my old Lazarus book had a photo of him. For many years I thought his first name was Simon.

Looks like he might be on a train. Wonder why he has his clarinet out.

Dan -

The photo is obviously posed, with the case open, the Bb displayed and him looking at two or maybe three reeds fanned out between his left thumb and index finger.

I agree that it's on a train, maybe to Boston or Philadelphia. I remember those seats well. The cars operated in either direction, and the seat backs could be pushed to the other side to make them always forward-facing. The seat back behind Bellison is in the opposite position, which permitted a 4-seat cluster for conversation or cards.
