Klezmer Piece with Wind Band or Orchestral Accompaniment
Author: travisjshaver

Does anyone know of pieces that are for clarinet and orchestral and/or wind band accompaniment?
I want to enter my school's concerto competition with a Klezmer piece, and I entered a recording into my school's wind band competition and if I win, I want to do a Klezmer piece.
I've found a few like "K'li zemer" by Robert Starer, Canzonetta and Maypole by Jacob Weinberg, Hassidic Dances by Abraham Ellstein, among other, but I can not for the life of me find music for any of them (except the Weinberg, but they are a little too short, as they are only like 2 minutes each).
So if someone could give knows some others or could point me in a direction to find music for some of these, that'd be great!

Thanks!

I wish that I could help you. I too really like Klezmer musik. I'm just a beginner clarinet player, but I hope to get good enough some day to be able to play some Klezmer. You may want to do a search on You Tube. They have a ton of Klezmer music on video. You may at least get some ideas of pieces to play, but at the very least you get to hear a lot of good Klezmer music. Just go to the search feature in You Tube and type in Klezmer.

I too, love the Klezmer style and would love to give it a try...even on the 2 minute pieces mentioned above. Have you found a teacher to help you figure out how to "bend" the notes and play the other embellishments or were you able to find some instructions on-line...or maybe you've figured it out yourself? If you found some information on-line, would you mind sharing the source?

Tom Puwalski, who sometimes posts here, is a great Klezmer player. His youtube channel might have some ideas for you?

There are several you tube posts that discuss and demonstrate how to do this. They generally are under a title that refers to ''laughing clarinet''.

There's a piece that isn't entirely for clarinet solo, though it has a nice extended one on the middle for clarinet of soprano sax (sounds better on clarinet of course). It's called "Klezmer Classics" by Johan de Meij. It's for wind band, and not very difficult I'd say. Here's a link to it on YouTube. Decent recording! Even has Accordian in it!

this one has soprano sax playing the solo, and you could adjust tempo to your liking. I've heard it so many different speeds.

Then there's my favorite wind band klezmer piece called Yiddish Dances by Adam Gorb and it's brilliantly written. There's a great dialogue between the Eb, Bb, and Bass clarinet in the 4th movement. Doesn't feature just clarinet throughout, but many solos on different instruments, especially the 3rd movement. Quite Eb clarinet heavy too. But it's a fantastic piece. Here is the first movement, and this particular performance is pretty darn good, good style.

The rest of the movements should be there as well. Don't know if these would work for concerto competition, but regardless they're great pieces. Hope I helped maybe a little. Haha.
