 Auditions today....
Author: dipsy

We have our band placement auditions today, and even though I can play the music, I'm nervous I'll make a silly mistake and lose points, like I did last year.

I've never had good auditions and have been in the band below my playing ability for a long time, and this year I would like it to change.

Any tips on keeping calm and not making mistakes?
Thanks!

Center yourself before you play. Keep your mind on the task at hand, not on what the director is thinking, nor how you have been playing - stay focused on what you are playing at that moment.

You have to go in with confidence. Be as prepared as possible and with as good red as you can find. Tell yourself that you can play the material and go in with your head up high and play with agression where it's called for. Take a few breaths before starting and tell yourself that you're the best player there and then prove it.

Accuracy is more important than speed. Play slightly slower than your top speed. If it's perfectly even, it will actually sound faster. You lose more for inaccurate rhythm than for anything else.

If the audition people want you to play faster, they'll ask for it, and you'll have the advantage of just having played through the scale or excerpt.
