 BG lig question

Does any one notice a "real" difference between the revelation silver and the super revelation? As far as I can tell the only difference is silver vs gold. Would like to get one but don't have the opportunity to try either one. Thanks for any and all help

The BG Revelation is a ligature that for me never quite holds the reed in place for too long or too easily. Once you've got it set perfectly symetrically and with the proper tightness, the sound is great but the reed can still wander a bit. Also, the metal piece is very hard to center and this ligature is will break if you use too much force in screwing it down. Overall, I went back to the cheapest Rovner, whose sound is only perhaps a tad less open but secures easily and never lets the reed slip. In my opinion the mouthpiece is 60% of the sound, the barrel and instrument are 37% and the ligature is 3%. If everything else is good, I can get a good tone out of a $5 beginners metal ligature that looks like it was welded together by plumber. I'd rather experiment with string, for all the problems the Revelation can give you.

The difference is due entirely to the placebo effect. Thick gold plating can be expensive, but the amount used on ligatures costs at most a few cents. However, it lets makers charge a bundle.

Wishful thinking won't make it so.

If you want the BG, send me a PM and we can work something out. I didn't particularly care for it. It wasn't bad, just not my cup of tea.

Exactly, I feel the same way about the BG Revelation. I'd gladly sell mine even though the sound is good. It's too finicky.

There is a difference. I don't believe in placebo when there is a physical reason for something to be different.

I believe in placebo when I had someone the same mouthpiece twice and they like it better the second time!

Prejudice to one material over the other, like when a teacher is playing a particular one or always says one is better, then the student will gravitate towards the one they are prejudice to. This is mostly because they've stopped listening and analyzing, and started to just blindly (even subconsciously) choose one over the other. Or, even more commonly with ligatures, is people choose the one that sounds the most DIFFERENT than they're used to. Different doesn't always mean better....

With these two ligatures it's a very SMALL difference and most people won't notice. Since so little material is in contact with the reed and so much leather-leatherette is soaking up vibrations like crazy, there won't be much noticeable difference.

Try the traditional silver and gold, you'll be able to tell the difference much easier between silver and gold.

It's also available in unobtainium. This will add half an octave to the clarinet, cure warts and restore virginity.
