Using a softer and harder reed
Author: Garth Libre

Does anyone else feel the value of using a reed that feels soft during one part of the practice and than a harder reed for the rest? I like the soft reed because it teaches me to use a steady studied embouchure or else the pitch becomes unsteady and the tone becomes raunchy. I like the harder reed because it makes everything easier, especially pitch control and difficult passages where excess tension might result in the reed collapsing against the mp face. I feel each has something to teach me.

And I thought I was the only one doing that. I find that a softer reed, about 1/2 strength softer, demands a gentler control and discipline to remain in tune and producing a focused sound. The harder reed builds stamina and strength for tone support.

I don't do it as a discipline. The harder reeds are the new ones that I have started breaking in. The softer ones are broken in and are performance ready.

I suppose if I think about it, out of the rotation of ten I have ready at any given time, I will go with the slightly stiffer ones of that batch when the particular performance demands a majority of loud passages.

I tend to start with a harder read and then go softer. I think I will try it the other way now to see.
