what is the "secret" to great "symphonic" projection when using a close (1.00mm) tip mouthpiece.
also, i really enjoy the sound of backun barrels, do they also help with projection?

thank you for your time

Symphonic projection comes not from the mouthpiece or reed (or an aftermarket barrel or bell) but from using extremely hard reeds (Drucker, Gigliotti, Morales) and learning, as Gigliotti said, to BTSOOI (Blow The S**t Out Of It).

It also comes from voicing the tone to have plenty of "ping" -- which I think of as a golden thread of high-partial energy running down the middle.

There are a number of exercises for this, including:

-- the swab-up-the-bell exercise
-- standing in the corner of the room, playing a loud low E and gradually fading it down while keeping the middle line B overtone strong; then on F and on up
-- Charles Neidich's voicing exercises, learning to play the complete clarion register without opening the register key

Wasabi.......... In the flute world....Emmanuel Pahud uses this idea....voicing the notes while thinking of a point behind the nose that would be affected by eating wasabi.
