 Selmer Series 9 or Privilege?
Author: Mark in Oz

Hi

First post here. I have a 40yo Series 9 which I reconditioned a few years back. It looks okay and plays well.

I have found a new Selmer Privilege at a very good price and, before I go and try it out, I though I would test the waters here.

Do you think this would be a worthwhile upgrade? I don't play professionally (or very well) - just for my own enjoyment.

Thanks

Rather a 9 star or a signature.

Really - how come?

I should add that those two are not options righ in front on me at the moment - the main reason I am thinking about this is that a music store near me is closing down and the only clarinets they have left are a couple of Privileges - at 70% off retail. Just got me thinking, maybe now is the time to make a change...

At 70% off retail i would go ahead and buy a Priviledge and if you do not like it resell it on Ebay for a nice profit.

I would definitely buy the Privilege....it is a superior instrument. Would share the name of the store and location so others may check if interested ??

Can you buy one for me, or tell the website or email of the store.
Thank You!

Thanks all for your input. Went out at lunch time. Played it. Loved it. Sold!

Paid $1,900 Aussie dollars (approx $1,975 US).

I was lucky. They had two on the weekend, but there was only one available today.

Allans was Australia's premier chain of music stores, with 25% share of the market for musical instruments. It has been going since 1850 and is to close its doors permanently this Sunday. 500 people are to lose their jobs. Sad really (though a little bit happy for me, I guess).

Online sales have really contributed to the demise of brick and mortar stores.

Hey Mark_in_Oz,

I also bought a privilege from Allans. Just curious, have you got the correct barrels with your clarinet? The one I bought I've ended up with two 66.5mm barrels, instead of one 65.5 and one 66.5.

At the moment there is no selmer dealer in Oz as it was Allans, so haven't figured out how to get a correct barrel.

Paul.
