What piece/pieces to play if I were to make a
Author: DavidBlumberg

I'm kicking around making a "showdown" video now that I have a good microphone for my iPhone of the my MoBa, compared to my Buffet Prestige R-13, Silver Key G1 Ridenour, hard rubber Libertas of Ridenour, and also my synth Silver key Alpha.

What pieces (and don't ask me to show off, real snipets of works that would show you what those instruments compared to each other sound like, and tune to with ME PLAYING, AND MY SETUP)

Of course your results would vary.

Nothing long at all, no Mozart Exposition (hey, these are Bb's!), but tonal work to put them through the paces.

Can't guarantee I will do it, or that it might take a few weeks, as I'm really busy, but I would love to do this.

I do have a favorite, a 2nd, 3rd - and to me the difference is clear.

My top 3 are killer good, but my #1 wins by a few lengths.

Figure what I would do is to play an instrument for 5 minutes, then record on it. Play another instrument for 5 minutes, etc - that way each instrument is warmed up equally (minimally yes, but would be the same).

I would have to put each video together doing it that way, or just play each instrument for a bit like if I were playing in Orchestra, and do it all in one take.

Any preference? Either way, would be no sound editing at all, and my iPhone with Zoom though very good, still has a touch of distortion.

Do it however works for you, and I'll listen.

The easiest comparisons are back to back, 5-10 secs of each horn same music phrase. It's tough to play it that way, and no easier to assemble later in a video editor.

But it's not hard to do a comparison from separate clips- just open 2 or more in separate windows, and A/B compare them back and forth. Even if it's all in 1 long clip, no reason you can't have 2 YouTubes open to same clip (at different time points) at the same time.

How about:

Mendelssohn Scherzo (for "ring" and cleanliness)

Rach 2 (for liquidity and tone)

A bit of the La Forza clarinet solo (for flexibility, tone)

Maybe the opening of Brahms Sonata #2?

Just a few ideas.......

Slow movement opening of Brahms Symphony No. 1 or Brahms Symphony No. 3.

Opening to Shepherd on the Rock.

I recommend La Bamba.

It'll tell you everything about an instrument: response, scale, flexibility, etc. I'm currently working with a top mouthpiece maker on a Ritchie Valens model (can't tell you which maker, but I can say that the early prototypes have been rockin!).

I just got tired of playing tunes like My Heart Will Go On and La Bamba on the same setup: I need more colors. At the moment, the Rico Reserve is my Celine Dion/Ritchie Valens mouthpiece, but I'm liking this new setup even more! Should be hitting shelves sometime over the summer!

At any rate, whenever I'm trying out new equipment, it's always La Bamba.

David, if you play "Let it Go", I'll have to decline to listen.

Eric, that was my audition video for the Youtube symphony. Didn't get in, but my dog got the English horn spot.

We'll just have to start a BBoard clarinet choir.

And anyhow, since TMZ got a hold of that footage, I've been meaning to mention that, while the Valens model mouthpiece has tremendous range of color, it is not so easily controlled as your video makes it seem. Much has to do with the oral cavity of the player, and the innate qualities artistry carefully honed over decades of practice.

I saw a college student wreck their upper molars on one of those things. So please folks, order with caution.
