Okay. So, I am sure there have already been threads posted on this website like this and I have searched them and looked through them, but I didn't find anything specifically useful for me.
I will be graduating undergrad in two more years (or less) and I am thinking about going to graduate school for musicology or performance (probably musicology).
The thing is... if I decide to go to school for musicology I would really like to be at a school or conservatory that emphasizes performance as well as academic studies. I love playing, and even though I am probably not going to perform professionally for a living I would still love to be the best clarinet player I can be.
I have a good G.P.A. (3.9,) and I don't mind hard work. I really want to be challenged musically as well. I was wondering if any of you had suggestions of potential schools for me.
I greatly appreciate any insights/information! Thanks so much!

As Tom and Ray say, the Chairman of our Underemployment Study Group is Art Majors.
You have to earn enough to live on, and maybe repay tuition loans. Musicology won't keep you in canned beans, and as for performance, listen to Mate Bekavac http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JrS-CanzAtU, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FL8PGUfHQs&feature=relmfu. If you're at that level, do what he did -- go to New York and wow Stanley Drucker enough to take you on. Otherwise play for fun.
Squeeze in some computer courses. My musicologist wife discovered a natural talent and retired as a bank vice-president in charge of international software distribution. Except for computers, music is the most common major of IBM employees. A music major proves that you can master a complex skill that takes a long time to learn. That gives you a significant advantage, whatever you decide to do.
The Mount Everest of graduate clarinet programs is Yehuda Gilad's studio at Southern Cal, but the competition for slots is ferocious. And even if you go to the University of Southern North Dakota, the profs will know more about their specific areas than you do. If you're really good you will be noticed, and becoming the best you can be is done in the practice room, not the classroom.
Get the best program you can find and jump in. That's what counts.

Hey!
You should think about McGill, in Montreal. It's a very academic school but there are plenty of opportunities for performance inside the school and out.

Check out the major Uniiversities that have large recognized music schools, there are several in the US, as well as Mcgill. Don't go more into debt because there are far to few jobs in music to ever pay back your loans as a musician. I'd also suggest that you take as many courses in other subjects that interest you that you might actually be able to make a living from. As a musicologist, you would have to get a DMA to teach in most universities as well so you might be better off doing a masters first in say music histoy, thoery etc. Even a double major in one of those subjects and performance if possible. If you're looking to actually make a living than I suggest you do a masters in bussiness admistration, or something related to that.
It's a tough market our there and even worse than most in the music field. ESP
