Reading through "Daniel Bonade: A Founder of the American Style of Clarinet Playing" and enjoying it _so_ very much. I may even try to find Bonade's "castle" on Google Earth.

What a great man. Sealing off his reeds with cigarette ash.

Once the reed has settled down, you've made the adjustments needed, perhaps around a few days to a week, I like the back side of the Wet Dry sandpaper, which has a wax film on it. That seals the reed pretty well. You can also use the oil on your forehead or somewhere around your face area and that also seals up reeds. Of course rub whatever works for you, on the back of the reed. I also like to seal the vamp cut the same way. Not only do the bottom of the reeds change, so does the vamp cut.

I surely can understand using ash! Not my cup of tea but it is very interesting and it will surely get players thinking of ways to seal up the reeds.

Yes, in the late 40s when I studied with Earl Handlon in Minneapolis, we heard that cigarette ashes were used to seal the reed surface, but Bonade's name was not mentioned in connection with it.
