Two Software questions

I've searched for these but the posts are quite old so there may be some new stuff on the market.
What would people suggest as an easy (and cheapish) notation programme? I am anxious about getting rhythms right and someone on the board suggested such a thing. I have downloaded the Finale free for a month programme and it works fine. I want also to transpose and I did see a programme which would tell you if your pitching (singing) was accurate - that would also be good but it's not my prime purpose.

Secondly, something to slow down some 'play along' CDs that I have uploaded, again for rhythm practice. I have seen some free downloads but I am always anxious about these....

Gizmo's Freeware, which I've found to be a very reliablesource, recommends MuseScore http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-music-notation-software.htm. They announced plans to review several other programs, but there's been little activity recently.

If you have an electronic keyboard with a MIDI interface, you can connect the output to your computer and create scores from there. See http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-music-software.htm

The Amazing Slow Downer has gotten good reviews. It's $49.95 but there's a downloadable trial limited version http://www.ronimusic.com/.

If you're not afraid of reading a manual, you can do the same with Audacity, a free sound editor http://audacity.sourceforge.net/. From reading the site material, it seems not to work in real time. That is, you load the file, apply the slowdown function and then play it back.

I haven't tried using it yet, but the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music have a free program for slowing down music called Speedshifter.

The Amazing Slow Downer mentioned above is excellent; can change both tempo and pitch of a CD.

For tuning and rhythm practice you might consider SmartMusic http://www.Smartmusic.com at $36 a year. It has lots of rhythm exercises, playalong music, etc.

If you like Finale, I'd say stick with it. They offer their programs at different price points, and you could probably get away with using PrintMusic, which is relatively cheap. I second Ken's suggestion of Amazing Slow Downer. It's a great program with a very musician-friendly interface.
