Tunable barrel

Hi, I have this old Pan American Phoenix metal clarinet that has an tunable barrel, but I can't seem to figure out how it works. The barrel can be pulled out, then a ring unscrewed, flipped, and screwed back on, but I don't see a difference in the length or anything else. I was wondering, does anyone know how it works?
