when i rejoined my community band on alto clarinet-i expected a snooze fest. its been anything but as parts are far better than i expected. some have even been challanging like sleigh ride. the alto part is extremly difficult at the speed its supposed to go. also a challange has been playing alto sax parts when there are no alto clarinet parts. you cant fly all over the clunky alto clarinet like you can alto sax. over all i have been extremly pleased with the quality of the parts and having more fun than expected . eventually i will upgrade to a top pro model like a selmer or buffet when i can find a good deal on one.

Two of my favorites are Dahl's "Sinfonietta" that has a wonderful alto clarinet cadenza that shows off the instrument really well. Dello Joio's "Variants on a Medieval Tune" has a very prominent part that goes back and forth with the bass clarinet. Ives' "Country Band" has a prominent alto solo too. I've done all of these and they're great fun.

The Holst and Grainger band pieces also have great alto parts. I've also played some fun level 5 parts by European composers that have been very challenging.
