What's the instrumentation for the Artie Shaw clarinet concerto? Also, where can I get the arrangment for it? i have the piano and clarinet version but want to play it with my jazz band.

I did my own transcription/direct lift from the original recording years ago (I think it was from the movie "Second Chorus" I don't recall). But, it's for full concert band plus 2 violins, 2 violas and cello.

As Ken mentioned in doing his own transcription, there is no commercial arrangement available for purchase. The concept for the music came from the movie, "Second Chorus," in which Artie appears with his jazz band playing the Concerto in a "concert" setting. I beleve that John Bruce-Yeh borrowed that original score and set of parts from the Artie Shaw Orchestra--which is still functioning--for his recording with the DePaul jazz ensemble. I was told, however, that they do not lend out their music to just "anybody" (meaning, you and me). I, of course, can understand their concern for the safety of the original parts. UW-Milwaukee's Jack Snavely commitioned his own arrangemant for their Japan tour a few years ago, but they too are un-willing to lend their arrangement. When I did the Concerto with our local community band, I rented the orchestral arrangement from G. Schirmer and then re-wrote the string parts for concert band. It worked pretty good, but I had to send all the parts back after the rental period expired. Recently, I have been considering commissioning my own arrangement, but those plans are still in the "maybe" stages. So, bottom line: originally written for The Artie Shaw Orchestra--clarinet part totally improvised by Artie; orchestral accompaniment on rental only; no rental versions for jazz or concert bands; many clarinetists have their own custom accompaniments and my experiance is that they are reluctant to share. Great piece of music. fun to play, audiencies love it!!! Be sure to "swing" the eighths and use generous, but tasteful, vibrato--alla Artie Shaw (as well as most Big Band clarinetists) Good Clarineting--and keep us up to date on your plans.

People ask me about the band parts for this music from time to time. This thread is now nearly 10 years old. Are there any updates to this information? Thanks,
Gary
