I have recently purchased a Lyons Monarch plus 100 clarinet at auction. I am currently refurbishing it but would like some background on the instrument and company itself. I had never heard of Lyons Band Instrument Company. It is a beautiful wood instrument. Anyone have any information they could pass along? thanks

A "stencil" is an instrument manufactured by company A, but branded, marketed and sold by company B.
Eg the Yamaha YCL-220 bass clarinet was manufactured by Vito. On the other hand, some Vito saxes were manufactured by Yamaha.

I don't know anything about your particular clarinet model, but here's some info on the history of the company, which I remember from when it was in downtown Chicago, on Lake St. a block or two west of State St. Basically, it's not really Lyons any longer, or at least Lyons as we knew it when it was an important place for instruments in Chicago.

Apparently, some other instrument lines (such as brass) sold by/made for Lyons also bore the name Monarch (or Monarche).
I touched on my experience with Lyons in the 1950s in this 2002 post, when I was trying to learn about an old clarinet I played for years (but no longer).

I would guess that the Mr. McCreery mentioned in that post had something to do with the specs for any clarinet (or sax) that might have been made for Lyons back in the days of the "real" Lyons. He was outstanding.

the more I look into the instrument it seems that the going impression is that it is a stencilled instrument sold by Lyons. In that case it will be very difficult to actually get detailed info about the model itself. It is a beautiful instrument and plays well. Thank you all for the information. If anyone has more info to add, please let me know.
