 mp nicks

What are acceptable nicks on a mp, acceptable meaning the nicks will not affect the mp's ability to respond, voice or whatever choice words that are used. the nicks I am referring to would be on the table or the tip of the mp where the reed would touch if you were to press it against the mp itself. I have a couple of mp with nicks in those areas and not sure if I need to get rid of those and buy new ones or are they ok to continue using. since I'm not a professional I wouldnt know if they were being affected by the nicks.

Any kind of nick on the side or tip rails is unacceptable and has negative effect on virtually everything. On the table it can be harmful either, but if the damage is far from the facing it's not that bad.

I agree that and nicks in the side or tip rails will dramatically affect a mouthpiece's playing qualities in a negative way. A nick in the table can be an issue as well depending on where it is.

If any of them were originally good quality mouthpieces you may want to consider getting them refaced rather than throwing them away. The cost of getting a mouthpiece refaced can often be less than the cost of a new mass-produced mouthpiece (Vandorens, etc.) but the resulting refaced mouthpiece will generally be a much better player than anything you could buy new at the same price.

Thanks for the info but I'm new to this kind of stuff so being here in atlanta georgia I wouldn't even know where to start to get something like a refacing done if it would concluded that it needed refacing. most people here are near places that do that stuff.

What kind is it? There are several craftspeople who advertise here who do excellent refacing work. Shipping a mouthpiece isn't expensive.

I think the Series 13 (440) Vandorens have a small "13" next to the bottom of the table. In any case, the mouthpiece may well be worth having one of the many mouthpiece makers here give you a direct opinion over the phone or by email.

I agree with Karl. The cost of buying a new M30 would be $85-$90 and it is likely that you could have your current one refaced for a similar or possibly lower price based on the advertised prices for refacing service that I've seen.

In my opinion (as a refacer as well as a player), if a nick on the rail (side or tip) doesn't go all the way across the rail; that is, the rail still has a continuous surface for the reed to interact with, then playing qualities may be totally unaffected. But if the nick goes completely across the rail, leaving a dip or bump where the damage is, then the mouthpiece must be repaired.

Even if the nick goes just part-way across, though, sometimes the damage will leave a raised lip of material around the perimeter of the 'crater' which can adversely affect the playing qualities, but that raised bit of material is very easily removed. DO try this at home!
