 R13 serial number question
Author: buit15

I am about to purchase an R13 with a serial number of 191xxx. All my research points this to the later period of the "golden age" of this instrument's manufacturing standard. Does anyone know or have they experienced any downsides to 1978 versus say the 1960's production line?

I am convinced that the difference in characteristics between any one of a hundred R13s produced in any one specific year is far greater than the difference in the average quality of the clarinets in one year versus any other year, golden or not. And every year had its lemons.
You have to try the specific instrument to assess if it's acceptable or not regardless of vintage

The bore measurement at the waist was a little tighter on the earlier R-13s than the later ones. Exactly when the change was made is something Buffet may have to answer, but I do know that one I had with a 101,xxx had a tighter waist than the one I had at 175,xxx according to my teacher at the time. I currently have a Vintage model that has a tighter waist than other R-13s of the same vintage.
