I have a couple of vintage Tonalin mouthpieces, one 34XXX, one 59XXX. Does anybody here use an old Tonalin? What reeds are suitable? I've tried out what I have around (Vandoren, Gonzalez, Rico, Rigotti) and am not getting great results.

Maybe they're not great mouthpieces. Are the original facings intact?

Some of the "older" Brilhart Tonalin's were really pretty good mouthpieces. I will admit that they are very spotty. Two mouthpieces of the same facing varied more than other brands. I don't know of anyone that uses one of these mouthpieces as their #1 mouthpiece, but I did have an old Selmer BT clarinet at one time that played very nicely with one of these. I believe I was using a standard VanDoren reed with it at the time in a #3 strength.

[Are the original facings intact?] Yes, I'm pretty sure they are.

[Maybe they're not great mouthpieces.] That's certainly a possibility. Based on the prices they command, though, there must be some folks who think they are great.

I've had mouthpieces that I thought were crap until I found the right reed for them and discovered they were wonderful. I'm hoping that's what'll happen with these Tonalins.
