 Bell socket diameter

Hello all,

I am an english hornist who wants to experiment with using a clarinet bell on my english horn. However, the two clarinet bells I have (selmer series 9 and kelly metal) have sockets that are too big. The socket on my english horn bell is exactly 24.91 mm. Do any of you guys know of a bell that might have a diameter close to 24.9 mm? Thanks!

What make is your cor?

I've got a Marigaux 930 and the older Selmer bells (CT and Series 9) will fit provided I wrap the tenon with a strip of paper.

I just checked a few things - Howarth cors have a 26mm diameter lower joint tenon, Marigaux tenons are 25.5mm and a Selmer CT bell socket is around 26.5mm.

The only thing to do is wrap thick paper or thin card around your cor's tenon to fit a clarinet bell as this is the cheapest option. I don't know what diameter C clarinet bell sockets may be - they could be the same as a Bb/A clarinet or maybe narrower, and chances are they could be on the expensive side if made in much smaller numbers than Bb/A bells.

As for aesthetics, I think the Selmer CT bells have the best visual appearance being more of a straight cone rather than having deeply curved sides as most clarinet bells tend to have nowadays.

The opinions I express are my own.

I have a Fox 500, which has the same tenon/bell socket diameter as a Loree cor. I tried using plumbers tape on the tenon and it worked ok, but I am thinking if I wanted to do a quick change of bells the tape wouldn't work.

Every Bb/A clarinet bell I have seen (hundreds) has had socket of 26.5MM +/- 0.1mm. My Leblanc Eb bell socket is 23.6mm so its possible you may find an Eb bell that could be opened up to suit, otherwise a competent tech could make a liner to reduce a regular Bb bell to suit once you found something that worked musically.
