The second episode of this excellent PBS series featuring Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Sympony aired here in Washington last night. An analyisis and guide to the understanding of Stravinsky's "Rites of Spring", it was an eye opener for me, even though I've played the piece numerous times. The program featured "solo" vignettes with bass clarinetist Ben Freimuth and Eb clarinetist Luis Baez brilliantly playing their "bits", as well as penetrating commentary by Thomas and several other SFSO players. The program is well worth looking for on your local PBS outlet.

The show hit our TVs here on the west coast last night, and it was fabulous! In addition to the wonderful presentation of the musicality, the lighting and photgraphy is stunning!
I join Larry B in highly recommending this (full) hour of superbe presentation.

Check out the Tchaik 4th Symphony if you get a chance. It is equally enjoyable to watch. I'm sad to say that you get to see David Breeden in the rehearsals but he is not in the performance due to back problems at the time. Luis Baez does a great job in his place. I wish more orchestras would do these types of programs as they give such wonderful insights into the conductor and ensemble as well as the music.

Note: this is a resurrection of Larry Bocaner's 2006 posting: I just watched the Berlioz DVD of the Keeping Score series and add my praise for Michael Tilson Thomas and the SFSymphony Orchestra's performances. Everything about the Berlioz disc is superb.
