Just picked up an interesting addition to my collection of clarinets. It's an old Pedler wood clarinet -- nothing unusual about that so far -- but it has almost a full Boehm system. I say "almost" because it lacks the low Eb key, but everything else is there and in good working order. Does anyone have any info on this nice horn?

We have diiscussed Pedler cls frequently, so I suggest a Search [above], via Ped cls will give many hits, those by Jim Lande will prob. be metal cls tho. Narrowing the Search to Pedler Full Boehm may give you adequate info, including several of my posts. The P Co did make [or have made] quite a full cl line, some VG, back in the dark ages. Luck, Don

Thanks. Incidentally, the case is one of the old ones with rope-style leather handles, one of which is missing. Any ideas on how to replace the handle besides bolting on a newer style? I want to keep it original in appearance, and have never restored a case before.

"how to replace the handle "
The leather covered rope handles are held in place with small brads. Remove these if present. Cover a piece of cotton clothes line rope with leather and glue with appropriate glue. Insert ends in existing holes and replace nails. I have done this but the results are mainly functional rather than esthetic. You're better off forgetting about keeping "originality" as far as cases are concerned since the newer soft side ones are far superior. As Don says, some of the Pedlers are very good horns; I have one.

You can use a black extension cord, cut into roughly 6-7" lengths. I am attaching a picture of a case with handles I did this way.

An excellent idea, Susie, fine appearance . If the cord is small diameter, tying knots in the ends might serve to secure the "handles" . Recalling my Pedlers, they were an alto and a bass cl, nearly Full Boehms [lacking the Eb/Bb "fork" due to the inter-acting left hand pads]. They both had an "unusual" Double Register Key mechanism, which was quite good when carefully adjusted ! Don

All you gotta do is get the old nails out first, like Draz sad, or else you won't be able to remove the old handles (or what's left of them.) Then squirt a good amount of glue in each hole. I use "Tacky Glue" which is a thick white glue you can purchase in crafts supply stores, but you could use something like Gorilla glue if you are careful not to use too much, as it will ooze out as it cures. I would not use glue gun glue. It doesn't stick too well to the plastic cord.
Then pop the new handles in place, making sure you get them in there as far as possible, then you replace the nails. (I would not trust glue all by itself, you really need those nails!) As you pound in the nails, be sure to get them to go through the center of each handle; you don't want to just barely catch the edge and have them come loose later on. Also be careful of the angle you are pounding the nails so they don't pop through the outside of the case!
You can set the nails a little deeper than the surface and fill the holes with wood fill if desired, then paint over that with acrylic craft paint in a color that matches the case....
I have an old Buffet case I'm working on right now, so I'll take some step-by-step pictures and post them on here in the next day or so.
BTW I am sure I have seen these extension cords in brown also, which might look nicer on a brown case...but I just use black on all of them.
