 Case for "unusual Buffet"
Author: czaucer

I have recently posted regarding an "unusual Buffet" (c. 1971) with an articulated G# key on the lower joint and some other extra keywork.

Thanks again for all the input.

Does anyone know where I could find a case for this horn?

The owner has the original case (a classic Buffet case-- thin and compact with the flair at one end for the bell) but after almost 40 years it's kind of beat. So she wants a new one.

But, because the G# key is on the lower joint, the lower joint is slightly longer and the upper a bit shorter than normal, and it will not fit in a readily available new case.

Any ideas?

Might have to be a custom job. I made my own case due to dissatisfaction with my old case. I hollowed out another case, carved out chunks of foam rubber, and covered it with velvet.

Any single case for a Bb clarinet should work if the lining is pliable enough - you will have to compress the polystyrene or foam tray where the lower joint socket goes so the extra length of the joint will fit.

Either compress it widthways with pliers to make the wall thinner (as in a Yamaha 26II or 250 case), or break it and flatten it downwards leaving the socket end of the lower joint section open.

My Selmer Bbs with the articulated C#/G# fit into a Yamaha case with minimal alteration. If a Buffet R13 case has a polystyrene lining, then it won't take much to lengthen the lower joint section so it'll fit - use a wooden spoon or something else suitable to press into shape the interior with.

Over time, the joint will settle into the case through use.

Sturdy old attaché cases, available for a going rate of $3 to $7 at yard sales and flea markets in the Washington, D.C. area (a target-rich environment for briefcases of all kinds) can be set up as excellent clarinet cases, with plenty of room for a doodad compartment. This weekend, at an Arlington neighborhood yard sale where many families set up tables along a bike/pedestrian path between major streets, I noticed a man buying three attaché cases from three different vendors. He selected high-quality ones, such as Samsonites, all of them black, and left the flimsy ones alone. I didn't quite have the nerve to walk up and ask him whether he played the clarinet!
