This is a question that others may have addressed in this site before. Anyway, I would appreciate any comments from others with similar experiences. I have been experiencing numbness in my hands, especially left hand, while playing. Some days it is very bad and within a few moments I can't feel the keys, other days, no problem at all. I've been playing for over forty years and have never really experienced this except for briefly a few times. A massage therapist recently told me she thought it might be thoracic outlet syndrome, but I figure I might have to head to the doctor for an explanation.

Absolutely see your Doctor - whatever it is, he can find it out. Neck, Carpal Tunnel, etc.....
And you don't want to drop your instrument on the floor because you can't feel it.
I have a student dealing with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from renovating his house using a Jack Hammer among other tools.
Did him in for the time being.

Could be: poor circulation, carpal tunnel, a neurological problem or even anxiety. Get to a doctor and find out.

Doctor visit for sure...but sounds like carpal tunnel. You can get a brace to wear when you're not playing and also do exercises (physical, not musical) to help with the pinched nerve. I've never had to have the surgery, and I learned the exercises to do so it helps a lot.

i suggest using a neck strap so that the instrument at least wont fall too far to the ground...this also might help relieving some of the pressure on your thumb. definetely see a doctor, but until then (and even after then), consider investing in a neckstrap.
