 keeping the passion....

i admire clarinetists who have remained committed to the art of clarinetistry for many years. Would love to hear short responses of what it takes to keep the intense passion for the clarinet burning year after year.

I would certainly not consider myself an expert since I'm still in high school, but with music in general, it seems my passion has always come from listening.

When I hear an absolutely fantastic performance (whether recorded or live, although especially live), I have an instant desire to want to be able to play with that kind of mastery. and that's what keeps me going.

The sound of the clarinet! It's gorgeous. The lower tones are just luscious.

The music written for clarinet isn't for dull minds, it's mostly brain-challenging. It makes success - whatever the definition of success is that day or that practice time - that much sweeter when it finally happens!

For the saxes reasonable (?) accomplishment comes faster than for the clarinet.
But it is this gradual accomplishment that is exciting and satisfying and keeps the flame intense.

If you are in it for the right reasons you will have no trouble enjoying yourself for many, many years.

You are never done learning, therefore each day is a new opportunity to learn something new.

Like Copland, I am still a high school student and am by no means a professional.

I love playing the clarinet, and performing, but when I perform my goal is not to please a crowd, but to make myself happy. When the crowd is pleased it is an added bonus. Let's face it, not everyone in the "crowd" is going to enjoy it as much as you, so play to please yourself. Success is another boost in passion. Recently I won the winds division in the San Antonio Symphony Future Stars concerto competition. That was a great feeling, plus I got paid! Not everyone has those opportunities, but if you can do as much of that as possible. It is a lot of fun, and the key to your passion is to be happy doing what you want to do.

How do doctors, lawyers, schoolteachers, bank tellers, bricklayers, etc. "keep the passion"? How do quilters, knitters, golfers, video gamers, woodworkers, etc. "keep the passion"?

If it's a job, it's a job. If it's a hobby, it's a hobby. Passion ebbs and flows. It does manage to disappear at times. You just keep going until it comes back.

K-
Been thinking about your question - besides playing, I'm on your list.
Great discussion to have - especially if you've crossed the half-century mark.
Bring wine and music, etc.

Yes, that about says it.

And of course, if it goes away permanently, it's time to do something else.

There's nothing special about the clarinet. (You don't look about you and think, YES!! -- the world would be a better place if we had more clarinet players;-)

"Use what talents you possess: the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except those that sang best." - Henry Van Dyke

I kept this quote in mind as I prepared myself for my first ever audition to join a band. I am in my 50's and returned to the clarinet two years ago, after having been away for over 30 years. I practice almost daily, but I know that I will never be exceptional. But it doesn't matter, because playing the clarinet is simply fun for me. Do what you enjoy doing and the passion and commitment will be there. By the way, I was successful at my audition.
