Some people (OK, one kind person) lamented my absence from the clarinet community. I thought I would re-emerge in characteristic fashion, fascinated by old equipment.
I've always had a vague idea of where most or all of my mouthpieces have come from, but this item (see attached photos) remains a mystery.
So who made this one (inscribed "Akademie Handmade FRANCE")? Beautifully re-worked by Vytas Krass.
I always thought it looked like a bottom-logo (1940s-era) Chedeville. There's a lot of similarity between the fancy underlining on those and this. At the risk of misquoting him, I believe Vytas disagrees with the Chedeville analogy because of the density (hardness, whatever) of the rubber. The rubber on this one is very, very soft. OK, so it's not a Chedeville. What is it? I once sent these photos to Lynn Thomas and she said she'd never seen anything like it.

This mouthpiece reminds me another mystery mouthpiece the old Herbert Couf "Artist" I did for Allan Segal. Blank design and the material (HR) are very similar. I think, these two mouthpiece blanks (not mouthpieces) are made by the same maker. I doubt it is Chedeville just because of the material. It's soft… and soft doesn't mean bad. It actually has similar sound characteristics to rosewood. Mellow dark and woody of course.

It does look like the Couf.
Probably some company made blanks, and the instrument makers put their names on it....a stencil, if you will.
Decent stuff.
Better still when done to spec. by expert facing artist.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
