 sharpie -vs-hard rubber clarinet barrell

Out of a moment of excitement, Last summer, when the company I work for had the band Bellevue Cadillac for a fundraiser, I asked the clarinet/Sax player to autograph my barrel (lyrique clarinet) with a silver sharpie. Will this cause any damage?

No.

Yes. It will make your throat F# play five cents flat, but only on Tuesdays, in Michigan. You need to replace the entire clarinet immediately, preferably with a contra-alto sarrussophone.

David your ISP says you are in Sterling, so you must have a great sound, much better than if you were in German (unless you were plated) [grin]

Thank you, Nitai! Actually, despite my Sterling ISP, my tonal quality is very plasticky (somewhere between acrylic and ABS, to be specific). I do plan to get plated soon, though. Can't wait to go for a swim in that big acid bath tank. Should I bring a loofah in with me?

Had Coltrane autograhped it the value would have doubled.

and your playing skills would increase by 10 points!

Allen,

In the spirit of historical accuracy, was the Sharpie even around during Coltrane's life (1926-1967)?

Being a researcher though, I may have answered my own question. Sanford introduced the Sharpie Fine Point black in 1964 but was not until 1979 that the company offered any other colors.

So, the notion of having a silver John Coltrane autograph is not possible.

PS When asked for an autograph, I use the classic black ;-).

janlynn, to answer your very serious question, I believe Dr. Hank Lehrer can find you an inexpensive contra-alto sarrussophone. That's the kind of guy he is. They didn't just GIVE him that doctorate, dontcha know. And if I had such an instrument, I would definitely have another Doctor, Allen Segal, craft a bocal for it (as I recall, contra-alto sarrussophones use bassoon or maybe contrabassoon reeds??); and I'd make sure yet another Doctor, that would be Doc Omar Henderson, thoroughly lubricated the instrument with one of his magic elixirs.

See, the BB is your one-stop shopping resource for EVERYTHING! And you thought we were only experts in Sharpies.....hah!
