Was wondering if anyone had tried the Prestige Buffet alto clarinets. If they have accomplished as much in revolutionizing the alto as they have the bass, these should be really fine.
Would love to hear some opinions one way or the other.

I'm playing the yamaha 631 alto clarinet on loan from the school, and it is DEFINITELY one of the best altos i've played. then again i've only played 2. heh. yamaha makes really really good professional altos.

I'm not sure I've ever even seen a new Buffet alto...at Clarinetfests anyway. I did get to try several new Buffet basset horns last year in Atlanta, and they were just beautiful. I'll never be able to pay that much for a horn, but they were very nice.
I own a Selmer alto, which does exactly what I need it to do. One of the groups I play in actually is playing a piece with a short alto solo..and my wife is playing it...a real alto clarinet reason for celebration.

I have a Buffet Prestige alto, but it dates from about 1983 so it is not one of the new models. It was purchased as a used instrument after being a tester for a local music store for a few years and needed some work to get it into playing shape. The clarinet has a beautiful, mellow sound and has been well worth the price. The only thing I would like to add would be a floor peg, which comes standard with the newer models.

Thank you all for your suggestions! I had not considered the Yamaha, but now I'll put it on my list of "need to consider". It sounds as though almost all the altos are special factory orders these days except the plastic Bundy's and Vito's.

While discussing alto cls, let me say a good word for the older Selmer-Paris[1980+], my B series is the best I have had the opportunity to play and cherish. It's only drawback is the right hand "reaches", wish I had larger hands ! It IS hard to find the newer, custom? models for trying, tho. Don

When I was in WW&BW a few (maybe four) years ago they had the new Selmer alto clarinet in stock. Great sound but didn't like the keys. Definitely worth trying!
