Assuming they aren't available at your local shops I was wondering whether it is possible to buy by the reed from online retailers.
Just wondering, because it could get quite wasteful if you wanted to number of different makes but could only buy by the box.

No - boxes only - local music store is the only option, or ask for sample reeds from the manufacturer or distributor of a particular reed type.

Online retailers selling individual reeds? Probably not.
The smaller mom and pop music stores (although their selection is much more limited) would be more apt to sell you some reeds individually.
You could also try contacting some of the major companies to ask for a few courtesy samples.
At one time, when Phil Shapiro was running Gonzalez reeds, he was very generous in sending out lots of free samples.
In the past, I have also gotten a large batch of samples from Xilema reeds, but do not know if this is still done.
Attending a Clarinetfest or similar gathering will also give you a chance to sample reeds of the different manufacturers..GBK

As far as I know, online vendors do not break up boxes. As mentioned above, synthetics are a different matter, as they are packaged individually, anyway, so it is not the same as breaking open a box.
You might want to try a Legere Quebec Cut reed. Go to their site www.legere.com and download the comparison chart. Finda a reed that you are currrently using and compare Legere's strength ratings to your current reed, so you have a baseline as to what reeds to try. The nice thing is that they will exchange reeds if you get one too hard or too soft, and they have a money-back satisfaction guarantee. While not everyone is enamored of them, they make a very good reed, and it lasts much longer than cane. It costs much more, but many find them to be an excellent value.
