 Involuntary bodily functions
Author: Mike Blinn
Date:   2007-07-14 06:50

Last evening, while playing bass clarinet in an outdoor concert, I had an uncontrollable urge to sneeze in the middle of a phrase. Trying to hide it, I kept the mouthpiece in my mouth. Big mistake. My front teeth caught my Legere reed and split it. Fortunately I had a backup and replaced it at the end of the number. It was not a new reed, and I am lucky not to have broken my mouthpiece, or worse, a tooth.

Tonight, while driving to work drinking an iced coffee, I couldn't stop myself from laughing at something on the radio. That resulted in coffee all over my clean, white shirt, and necessitated a trip home to change.

What a klutz I am!

I believe this was the technique employed by Sidney Bechet, in order to reach the highest notes on his soprano saxophone.

To sneeze on demand requires a bandmate to act as snuff dispenser.

If you tire of listening to hilarious commentary on the radio, turn off FOX.

You can kill a sneeze by holding your eyelids open.
(How on earth does that work - an instinct to stop the eyes popping out?)

Of course it requires one-handed playing.

"the title of this thread makes me want to tell some inappropriate jokes."
Yes, one does have to wonder which one in the spectrum of possibilities!

Speak harshly to your little boy
and beat him when he sneezes.
He only does it to annoy
because he knows it teases.

Drinking soda right before playing reeks havoc on the pitch.

Somebody previously posted that you pinch your nose right below the bone to erase that urge to sneeze. This technique is pretty useful.

You've never sneezed while playing until you've sneezed while marching and playing at 184 bpm... It wasn't very fun.
