With age, does the bore of wood clarinets warp or change in any way? If so how can this be detected? George

The bore becomes oval as the wood shrinks.

The opinions I express are my own.

Yes.
(After enough time, they transform into ocarinas. )

You're not supposed to put them in a "hot" wash, use lukewarm instead!

I forget who it was, but there is someone on this board that "recycles" "blown-out" clarinets.

George,
I suspect there is another more meaningful question that you have. However, my response is conjecture.
Yours is a rhetorical question. Would playing an instrument for fifty years change the instrument, or, more specifically, the bore? Well, yes.
Does the player change during the same time period? Yes.
Does it matter? If the player has consistently been able to control the instrument. Then no, it doesn’t matter.
All wood, even hard wood, is not equal. Ageing, processing, care, etc. all have their effect. Thus, some wood will warp or change more drastically than other wood.
“If so how can this be detected?” As far as I know, there is no scientific study on this subject, if so, the answer is: an artist detects inconsistencies in tools because of their sound and playability.

Jeez, my best-playing clarinets range from 55 to 70 years old. I sure hope they won't go oval on me and start sounding like ocarinas.........
