 selmer signet clarinet???
Author: rrobeson

I've got a clarinet that's stamped selmer signet (but no other markings like 100, special, soloist, etc.). The serial number is 9940. Any idea how old this is and how it's different from a 100?

Thanks

If it's a wooden clarinet made in USA, it's probably a forerunner of the signet special and dates from roughly 1949. This site has some info.

I have one with the serial number 9830 and it's a LOT different than the Signet 100. The keys are different, the springs are different, it is just made more like a French Selmer in a lot of ways. It even came in a zippered Chesterfield case. John Butler is overhauling it right now; maybe he'll comment on it.

As Susieray has stated I just got through with this overhaul this afternoon. The trill key work is similar in style with the Signet, but the upper joint C# has the flat spring under the key like the Buffet clarinets. The lower joint LH C#/B or F#/E also has levers in the same style as the Buffet pro line clarinets. The keys are silver plate, but I don't know if they have been plated since leaving the factory or not. I found the keywork to be a little on the "soft" side, but it does have a good sound.
