 Optimizing an Alto
Author: blazian

Does anyone that owns a resotone alto know how to make it work perfectly (or at least really well)? This includes tuning, reeds, mouthpiece type, ligs, pads, and some other things. It does not include type of inst.

What about the mechanical factors that are involved? I don't own an alto(yet), but I'm guessing there is more to a good setup than Bb clarinet. Some of the things that could be considered: pad height(s), register mechanism in order, checking for leaks, other things like that. Hope this helps!

In my alto, the register mechanism (separate holes for register key and Bb pinch) proved tricky. Not the mechanical things as such, but the register pad can cause a lot of hissing in the long B and C in the clarion, while the pinch Bb comes out as nearly blaring clear - quite different from the sopraon Bb horns. I widened the outside end of the register tube and put on a tapered/conical register pad, and the hiss was a lot better.

I have an excellently refaced mouthpiece, and this alone probably did the most significant improvement. Ligature is an off-the-shelf Rovner Dark, the reeds are Hemke Alto Sax reeds.
